Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent.
This worship service starts a spiritual discipline of repentance, prayer and fasting, and acts of sacrificial giving. The season is meant to be a time of self-examination and preparation so that we can grow in faith and better understand the forgiveness that gives through the cross.
Although we usually mark the sign of the cross in ashes on each person’s forehead, this year will be a service of healing. We will confess the many ways that we are broken and in need of healing. Then, we will practice an ancient ritual of anointing with oil and blessing. We receive the sign of the cross on our foreheads in oil, and ask for Christ to heal us and strengthen us as we begin our spiritual journey through the season of lent.
